Oil Change 101 | When, Why, & What to Change
When should oil be changed?
The rule used to be that you changed your oil every 3,000 miles, but the rules are different now; technology has come a long way—specifically engine tech and the quality of oils—which means that the interval of time between oil changes can be a lot bigger now, but it can also vary depending on your driving style, oil type, and vehicle type. One way to know what your recommended interval is would be to consult your owner’s manual, and if you’re a hands-on person, you can roll up your sleeves and check the engine’s dipstick. Of course, you can always have someone from our team perform the check—and the replacement—for you.
Why is it crucial to keep up with oil changes?
You know oil changes are important, but do you know why? Oil keeps all the moving parts in your engine, well, moving. It doesn’t provide the power, but it does provide the lubrication; by lubricating the various moving parts of your engine, oil protects against wear and tear, overheating, and engine deterioration and breakage. It’s crucial to the health of your engine—your car won’t run without it! Letting old oil sit or leaving your engine with too little oil can actually damage your engine and could cause costly repairs down the road.
What type of oil should I use?
That answer can vary from engine to engine, but looking at your owner’s manual should give you a good idea of which oil types are best for your vehicle. Our parts department stocks synthetic, partially-synthetic, and natural oils, so you’ll have all your choices laid out when you visit us!
